New Signing for Girona
Girona announced on Saturday the acquisition of Mauro Furtado, an 18-year-old Portuguese centre-back from Benfica, signing until 2031. The player, who won the Bronze Ball at the U-17 World Cup and was named best player in the semi-finals and final, arrives at Montilivi to strengthen the defense of Quique Álvarez’s side, which has only collected one point in the first two league matches.
Profile of Furtado
The club describes Furtado as a centre-back with “an enormous margin for growth and a great future projection”. They highlight his “physical condition, competitive maturity and leadership ability”, as well as his “defensive solidity, positioning, ability to anticipate opponents and notable quality in ball distribution”. His experience on big stages despite his youth is also noted.
Career
During the previous season, Furtado played six matches with Benfica’s U-23 team and became world champion with Portugal’s U-17 national side, where he earned the Bronze Ball and the best-player award in the semi-finals and final.
Expected Impact
With this signing, Girona adds its sixth reinforcement after a slow start to the season, aiming to step up and solidify its status as a promotion contender.
